We intend to strongly support the continued growth of the Planar business, with standalone management, under the broader Leyard umbrella. This acquisition demonstrates Leyard’s ongoing commitment to expanding its global presence.” 8:26 am Glaucoma treatment company Glaukos ( GKOS ) Glaukos ( GKOS ) reported its first quarterly results as a public company last night, with Q2 top- and bottom-line numbers coming in mixed relative to expectations. GKOS, which held its IPO on June 25, is a commercial-stage medical technology company focused on selling a portfolio of injectable microstents that treat glaucoma. This is a large market opportunity: according to one study cited in the company’s IPO prospectus, more than 78 million people worldwide (4.2 million in the US) have glaucoma, and this number is expected to grow to 88 million (4.7 million in the US) by 2019. GKOS says they developed their Micro-Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (:MIGS) procedure to address the shortcomings of current glaucoma treatment options. MIGS procedures involve the insertion of a micro-scale device from within the eye’s anterior chamber through a small corneal incision. The MIGS device reduces intraocular pressure by restoring the natural outflow pathways for aqueous humor. The company claims that MIGS procedures are safer, preserve more eye tissue, and result in faster recovery times and fewer complications than invasive glaucoma surgical options. The company received FDA approval and launched their first MIGS device, the iStent, in the US in July 2012.
